Luxury item

Post by backwoods doc »

Okay, we all share the goal of getting our gear to the least weight possible.

But if you could add one luxury item, weighing less than a pound or two, what would it be?

To start the ball rolling, mine is a Thermarest Trekker chair. 10 ounces of pure luxury for the backside.

Hmmmm. My Trekker chair only weighs 5 oz. But my luxury item is usually a book.

I bring a Kindle. 7.2 oz and dozens of books -- I spend a lot of time reading on the island (usually while sitting on a dock). More than once I've been socked in by weather and read an entire book in a day.

I laughed at my friends for taking a helinox chair zero because it is an unnecessary one pound. I was trying to get comfortable sitting on the dock last year while reading a book when a fellow kayaker pulled his chair out and offered it to me. I now carry one. Crow doesn't taste bad when you're comfortable.

I also carry a kindle, my last trip with paper books I carried four pounds of books. I was rained in a lot last trip and read 6 books.

me also: a book, usually a paperback mystery novel. (I wonder if this cluster of "book[s]" answers reflects some sort of selection effect: people who frequent these forums when they could just be FaceGramming instead are people for whom words are a natural medium?)

Leaving for my first IR trip in 16 days, so: I'll likely find out at the end of my trip which items were my luxury items. For the next two weeks, they're all necessities!

Duffy, when you arrive in RH look me up in the campground-I will be leaving on the Ranger the next morning so I will definitely be “ in town”. I will put a note on the message board at the vis ctr.

Will do, Bobcat. My wife and I will be the ones wheezing under the weight of ridiculous packs.

Love my Monarch Alite chair. I also bring a kindle so I can read whatever I'm in the mood to read.

I tried my buddies trail camp stool a few weeks ago while on the island. It doesn't seem like it would be comfortable, but I thought it was great I'm usually a sit on an available log type of person. It rained quite a bit and sitting on wet logs was not enjoyable. I'll be picking up one of these stools soon.

The question was about luxuries, not staples. That's the reason I made no mention of bourbon or cigars.
