Screenshots of old maps
Here are a pair of screenshots of the 1959 & 1975 maps from the old park service brochures. You can see the 1959 map has no trail to Malone Bay, just a trail from Crow Point up to the ridge. Both maps also show the old trail in to Lake Halloran that was removed from the maps starting in 1979.

Re: Screenshots of old maps
I for one am happy that the inland lake portage trails were put in (or further developed?) since then.
2018, 2019, 2021 (all inland lakes by canoe); 2022 X2 (RH and WC); 2023 HC

Re: Screenshots of old maps
1983 is the next map date I see in the archives from brochures dated 1979-1994, so somewhere in the 1978-1983 window I'd guess is when the interior portage trails were officially marked off.

Re: Screenshots of old maps
Those are a lot of fun! Quite a lot that's been added since that first map:
- No Minong, of course.
- West half of the Feldtmann Loop didn't exist.
- West half of Huginnin didn't exist either.
- No Indian Portage Trail, so no land route out of Chippewa Harbor
- In general, the McCargoe/Chickenbone area was its own little disconnected trail system.
- No trail to Lane Cove
- No east end of the Greenstone trail beyond Mt. Franklin

Re: Screenshots of old maps
I noticed transportation options to Duluth, MN out of Windigo and to Eagle Harbor, MI out of Rock Harbor. Wonder what the story is there?
