We'll be on island in June, and from the NPS site only place we plan to overnight that doesn't have a bear locker is Feldtmann. I have an Ursack but I only have one. With 3 of us trekking, even though it will be our penultimate site before leaving, I am not confident that I'll be able to get all our remaining smellables into one bag... hoping I don't have to buy a 2nd one for this one trip!

Unless they've been moved---no trivial task, since they're like 200 pounds each---there are two bear lockers at Feldtmann, just diabolically well-hidden. See my Moosewatch trip report from last year (I'll come back and edit to add a link after dinner) for details!

According to him you have to use a locker or a hard sided container.
Hard pass there.
More solutions looking for problems to solve.
Since they won't even enforce the most basic rules I don't know why they bother with things like this.
I have not heard anything official that puts all the pieces together but my estimation is they are trying more "desperate" restriction measures to save the couple of wolves that have gotten too aggressive. The measures are not so much for the protection of humans as much as protecting the wolves. The race is on to retrain or remove the bold ones before others learn and accept the same behaviors. Returning a single wolf to the mainland has risks all it's own.

Sounds like the $325 I spent last year for 2 XXL ursacks was a waste. Large hard side containers do not work good with my kayak. Might have to do more mail drops and not take 14 days of food for a trip.
That's the general take on interpreting the latest rules, no Ursack allowed. There's a big potential contradictory issue since the Ursacks are on the official, approved list, BUT the accompanying qualifier text that I think is meant to disqualify Ursacks is too vague. It says "Soft-sided containers, such as mesh or dry bags, are not an approved storage container on Isle Royale.". These two soft sided bags types are explicitly called out and neither are Ursacks.

Could be a new reality TV show: "Diabolically Well-hidden: The search for food lockers on Isle Royale." The finder ironically wins a bear vault.
