My 2010 Isle Royale Fishing Trip report and photo's
Well, since My buddy Steve and I spent the whole trip fishing from my boat, I thought I would post this shortened trip report in the Fishing forum!
Spent 7 days from June 4-12th, and fished every day, rain or shine. We managed to catch a bunch of northen pike and 1 coho salmon. Most fish were caught in Duncan Bay, Chippewa Harbor, McCargoe Cove, and Lane Cove! They were anywhere you could find a weed or weed bed! We caught the most on the two nicest, sunniest days we had. It rained three or four days, off and on, but we managed to catch them on these days as well!
We used medium-heavy spinning gear with 8lb Fireline with a 8-12" titanium leader.
We trolled alot around Chippewa Harbor with large original perch colored Rapala's and caught the coho right at the narrows leaving the harbor and 8 or 9 pike towards the back of the harbor.
We casted mostly, throwing spinners, plastics, body baits, and spoons. They were HUNGRY!
We noticed lots of little minnows and some 5-6" perch around weed beds and also seen a dozen sucker fish swimming around too! Suckers equal big Pike! Too bad you can't use them as bait.
We saw a moose in the same area on two occasions, and by noting the hair loss it looked like the same guy!
We saw an Eagle swoop down, snatch a 20" northern out of the water fly up and over a hill, and then we heard the Eaglets screaming for a meal. Once the Eagle dropped off supper to the babies the noise stopped, the Eagle swooped back down, grabbed another Pike, headed over to a tree near the shoreline, and then had dinner itself. It was a cool thing to see!
We saw a family at least 6 Otter living across the harbor from the dock at Chippewa Harbor.
We saw 2 or 3 Otter on another occasion playing around a beaver dam. Nice Beaver,,,,,,DAMN
We had beaver's letting us know to stay away with a tail slap on the water's surface. I Thought it was a giant fish until I spotted him before he did it again.
We saw snowshoe hare more than I have ever seen themon Isle Royale. There was a group/family of 3 near the trail on the way to Lake Mason.
We fished Lake Mason (barbless of course) from shore and managed to catch one northen pike, and a tiny one at that. We saw a loon pair at Lake Mason as well!
We had a Fox greet us as we entered Chippewa Harbor!
We had the Rangers (nice guys!) ask us for our fishing licenses, and we complied. I was actually happy he checked ours, as neither of us have had it checked before, anywhere in Michigan.
We had smooth crossing over Lake Superior! Coming and going!
And last but not least....
We made our reservations for next year, and Steve is trying to talk me into going again this year in the Fall!

Nice fish!! It must have been pretty impressive to see an eagle grab a fish that big out of the water and fly off with it. Thanks for sharing the info.

Uhhh.. Lake Superior!!! If you can figure it out by the photo's, great! But that's all you'll get out of me. Heck my buddy didn't want to post anything but I had to share with you all! It is actually easy fishing. Just look for the weeds and there will be pike nearby.Ingo wrote:Uh, were did you get the big ones? (i won't tell anyone )

Re: My 2010 Isle Royale Fishing Trip report and photo's
We caught a total of 191 fish. That's 190 pike and 1 coho. We got at least 24 over 36inches and 7 over 40". We missed a 48" and a possible 50incher as well. There is a tremendous fishery at Isle Royale for sure!Ingo wrote:Uh, were did you get the big ones? (i won't tell anyone )
We are both convinced the Michigan State Record (39lbs) is lurking in these waters!

Nice pike, did you try for lake trout? We caught some last year in Tobin Harbor trolling.

Re: My 2010 Isle Royale Fishing Trip report and photo's
Never did try trolling for trout this year. I did troll around chippewa harbor but was fishing more for pike than trout. Besides, my buddy couldn't stand it even for the few hours we did troll. He absolutely hates trolling! And i guess i can't blame him as we were catching plenty just casting!johnhens wrote:Nice pike, did you try for lake trout? I did ride across and back on the RangerIII with a group of guys who were lake trout fishing. All wekk long they had fished the same areas where they had luck on previous trips 10 years ago. This year they only caught around 10 lakers. They said it seemed to be alot slower.

Cool! I always enjoy your fishing pics and comments. I'm going to do a two week trip in about a week. Hit me back if your interested in any info from the inland lakes around Chip Harbor. I'm going to fish each lake hardcore for 2-3 days.
