I'm interested in how you'll get to L. Benson, L. Angleworm and L. Sargent. Map source, whatever?

How do you get to these lakes with a canoe with them having no portages? How difficult is it? I would imagine the fishing is as good or better than the other interior lakes since there is limited access

Robin621,

I noticed that you will be spending a lot of time in the backcountry. FYI, here is Cross-Country camping rule #6. Maximum stay at any one location is one night. Tents and camping gear must be moved at least 1/2 mile from the previous nights stay. This is related to the LNT principles of not trampling down the vegetation near your backcountry campsite.

I have a tough time walking cross-country on Isle Royale and I am not portaging a canoe.

Regards,
Mark

Jerry, the Daisey Farm Trail will lead me to a stream that goes into Lake Benson. Colvinch, I've been training since the beginning of December and my trip isn't till July. I've been practicing with weight in my pack and hiking mountains here in PHX. Plus a lot of weight lifting has been going on. I should be in top shape by July (I hope). The canoe is 14ft and and weighs 40 pounds. I'll be bringing a compass, map and a handheld GPS unit. I'm also collecting information on the best way to tackle the backcountry lakes. My brother, former marine, will be helping me as well. Inca...thanks for reminder. I read the rules for the backcountry already (I can't pitch my tent where I can see water either). I'll be sure to leave no trace (I'll be pushing the grass back up). In addition, I will be double checking with NPS to make sure that I'm following all the rules and everything is "cool" before I take off. I've already talked to a few park rangers already and they said my itinerary should be okay. I have a couple other routes planned in case I have to change my itinerary for whatever reason. I'll be renting a boat from Rock Harbor toward the end of my trip. I figured a little trolling would be fun to do.

Departure Date: June 4th
Coming From/Via: Copper Harbor
Itinerary: 7 days
Notes/Other:2 experienced, 1 novice

Drive to Copper Harbor, MI On the 26th from SW michigan. 12 hr drive at least. We are staying at the state park there, Ft. Wilkins $31 for the night, and a good last night gear shakedown. The next morning we go to Queen IV to depart for IR at 8 am.

Day 1: Hike to Either 3 Mile or Daisy Farm campground for the night. Either will work, but depends on weather and our mood.
Day 2: McCargoe Cove or West Chickenbone campground
Day 3: Hatchet Lake
Day 4: South Lake Desor
Day 5: Washington campground, WINDIGO
SPEND THE NIGHT, RECOVER, RELOAD, and wait till morning to Catch Ranger II Ferry
Day 6: Catch Ranger II ferry to McCargoe Cove, then go to Lake Ritchie Camp, or Moskey basin.
Day 7: Lake Ritchie Moskey basin to either Daisy Farm or 3 Mile
Day 8: Hike to Rock Harbor and spend the night, RECOVER
Day 9: Catch ferry back to Copper Harbor

OR When we get to Windigo, go straight to Rock Harbor and then spend night at 3 mile campground, then Rock Harbor, then catch ferry back on a Friday, a day earlier than the original trip. This is in case we have an injured person, or just are tired. Since my wife and I are "Seasoned" and prefer a long trip, our unseasoned veteran might need a break, in which we can split and finish different routes.

I am a regular runner, and lifter who runs 3 to 5 miles a day, and weighs 200. My wife is about 150 but physical. My Co worker friend is hard to predict but couldnt resist a chance to hit isle royale this year. This is my first trip on IR, so I need feeback on water filters. We normally use a FIRST NEED WATER Filtration system, but have recently switched to a MSR Microworks filter? Any reviews on it? Also, I would love to hear about relative weight restrictions people have imposed on themselves for the trip. I have l have planned 35 for myself and 30 for my wife. THANKS

I bought an MSR Microworks filter last year and used it on the Island. It worked great, just make sure you know how to use it and especially how to clean it. Don't forget to bring along the cleaning sponge they provide to you. At times during the trip, the filter would be harder to pump but all you have to do is scrub the filter with that sponge and it works great again. Overall the filter worked great; and as a bonus, it is compatible with Nalgene bottles (wide mouth), so you can screw it onto the bottom of the filter to pump! this was a GREAT feature.

Notes/Other: I've hiked all the trails on the island and have paddled 1/2 of it (McCargo to Daisy Farm and Windigo to Malone). Hope to paddle the Windigo to McCargo or Daisy Farm to Malone. All depends on the weather. Or, I might just base camp and day paddle.

No not my time frame...born in 1974....I'm young in some eyes and really old in others. I live in the neighborhood behind the highschool that borders on the swamp/lake
