Cell coverage has been confirmed by quite a few people there, though not myself.

There is actually cell-phone coverage on many parts of the island. I had coverage while anchored at the Duncan Bay Lakeside Camp back in 2005. That was quite surprising.

It depends largely on your location, the type of phone and carrier you have. If you have a clear view of the lake, it's at least worth a try.

The two locations from which the largest percentage of Isle Royale can be seen would likely be the Mt. Ojibway and Feldtmann Ridge observation towers. I've only visited Ojibway, but on a clear day the entire eastern half of the island is easily visible from there.

Of course, the best panoramic view of all, I imagine, would be from the seaplane.

The best views IMO are along the Greenstone Ridge from Mount Franklin to Mount Ojibway. The ridge is bare enough in places that unobstructed views to the north and south are plentiful. This is not my picture from Mount Franklin so I thank Steve of Steve's National Park blog. It's taken with a fairly long zoom or a hi res digital crop. Amygdaloid Island and the Sleeping Giant in Canada are quite prominent.
