Has anyone made the hike from Malone to Desor South? How tough of a hike is it? Can you make it to Desor South after being dropped off by the VII at it's estimated arrival time at Malone of 10:00 before dark?

It's not a bad hike, the first 4 miles or so are along Siskiwit Lake, and very scenic. Then you will have a few miles of mainly uphill, but not tough. You can easily do this hike before dark, it's only about 10 miles.
I've hiked it several times and it isn't hard at all.

Budduci pretty much covered it; I'll add that it's not "super" scenic as in you'll want to keep stopping every fifty feet to take a picture, like some other sections of trail; and as far as trails go, the Ispheming portion from around the edge of the lake up to the tower (the uphill part) can be a bit hard to pick up/follow in sections, depending on time of year. It's not super tread, and follows through some grassy and rocky areas.
The Greenstone, from the tower to Desor South, is a breeze.

Thanks for the input. Knowing that it is doable, it may become a leg of my next visit to IR's itinerary.

Last time I was there (2009) it was a bit dicey finding the trail at Ishpeming Point Tower.

What part of "Walk past that tree, and between those two shrubs where there seems to be an opening.. but maybe not.." didn't you like?
