Hey GW, there's almost always skeeters, how bad just depends on weather, where you are, etc. Black flies may be bad, but maybe not. I always bring a head net, but never had to use it (thankfully), but it's good insurance. And good bug dope. There's some discussion in other threads here. Hope that helps a little more. Bottom line is you just don't know, but you do want to be prepared for them to be bad.

Early July is still maximum bug season. Expect less around the lake Superior shore, more inland. Good advice to bring along a head net.

Taking a head net and good bug dope weighs very little. I think it is better to be "loaded for bear" regarding bugs, and then if they AREN'T that bad, life is good. It would be really annoying to have bad bugs and little you can do besides swatting them (the "pioneer method").
Cheers,

Like others have indicated, that time of year is maximum bug season. Long sleeves, head net, lots of bug dope. And depending on where you are on the island, it's even going to be worse. If you are on the Greenstone or some other inland trail, they may actually pick you up and take you back to their nest and feast on you there. In July, your only saving grace from bugs is along Lake Superior...hoping for cooler weather...and winds off the lake. Godspeed!
