Where to eat around Grand Portage

In the planning stages for my 4th trip to the Isle but this is the first time I've gone in from MN. I'll be coming in Friday Night May 3rd leaving for the Isle on Friday AM. What is a good (or decent) place to eat in Grand Portage? I'll probably just sleep in the back of the truck, but in case I feel money burning a hole in my wallet what are hotel/Motel options?

Thanks
Andy

You have 3 choices that I know of, none are bad, none will make you drive to Grand Portage to eat...
1 - the grill in the convenience store in G.P. Had a pretty good sandwich there.
2 - the restaurant in the GP Lodge and Casino. Been a while and didn't leave any particular impression.
3 - Ryden's On the Border, well, almost literally on the border so a few miles from GP. Old style truck stopish diner. Definitely the most character, always go there for breakfast--the one sandwich I had was so so.

And your 2 options for a room are Ryden's--$50ish rooms that are basic but clean--a modified double-wide split into 4 rooms I think. I like it but maybe not for all. And then the Lodge/Casino which are more standard hotel rooms. Summer rates are 100+ but they do run specials and off-season is likely less. The one time we stayed there the restaurant wasn't open early enough for breakfast, so we had to go up to Ryden's anyways.

Thanks for the help Ingo. I know the Houghton area well as the last two trips to the Isle have been on the float plane and I've had one trip on the Queen where we stayed in Houghton the night before and after. Looking forward to coming out of MN for a change.

It is south of Grand Portage, in Grand Marais, but the Angry Trout is amazingly good. There is also a deli next door with smoked fish.

I'll second that, as will many others. Although not a quick bite ...

Sounds like I might need to take a rest break for supper on the way up (and on the way back home for smoked fish). Thanks for the tips.
