It is not clear through the Ilse Royale Greenstone (news paper) whether there are campsites where individual fire pits can be found. Are there only 2 options for fire to be found on the island? Which I'm assuming would be (1) the communal fire pits and (2) grill-on-a-post?

Or is there also third option of a private fire pit to be found at some/any campsites?

Essentially you are right. The only options for fires (other than twig stoves) are communal rings at sites and the grills. I've stayed at most of the hikable campgrounds and really like Little Todd Harbor partially because our campsite actually had a ring right next to the tent pad (in our site not a communal ring). That's the only camp sites that I know of with fire pits right at them.

The Chippewa tent sites also have rings, whereas the shelters use the post grills. The same might be true for Malone tent sites, if I recall.

The last time I was on the island in 2011, the kids staying at one of the group sites at Island Mine had a fire going. I don't know if it was legal, but the ring looked legit.

Island Mine and Malone are a 'maybe'.

Island Mine has a fire ring at every individual and group site.
Malone has a standing grill at every shelter and a fire ring at the group tent sites.

McCargoe Cove has a single fire pit near the dock. If you use Google Earth you can see two brown rectangles which are picnic tables next to the fire pit.

Post grills in the wilderness just don't seem right.....

At least they are only at the perimeter sites.

They might not be "wilderness" but they might prevent some greenhorn from burning down the forest...

I don't have a problem with it at sites with docs and shelters. If I boater wants to come in throw a bag of charcoal on the grill, camp a night and grill up his his lake trout catch, more power to him.

Let's face it the site the campgrounds with shelters and boatdocks are very wildernessy anyway.

I found that the wikitravel page for Isle Royale, along with other details, mentions specifically for each campsite if there is a community fire ring or "fire rings" (meaning separate rings for individual sites) seems to be accurate as far as I can tell, based on info I have gotten on the forum here.

Now I've gotten conflicting answers about Chippewa Harbor though. Earlier in the thread you can see Tom believes there are actually individual fire rings at Chippewa.

There are standing grills at each of the shelters and a fire ring at the group site. I am pretty sure there are no rings at the 2 tent sites, but I might be having a memory lapse
The group site is very nice and one of my favorites. In fact, every time I have stayed at Chippewa, I have stayed at the group site even with shelters available. I like the view and it is more private.
