Any thoughts on a decent brand and model for the island? A light model would be nice too. I was considering this model, http://www.rei.com/product/835167/c-cra ... rver-radio but really do not have a clue. Any assistance would be very helpful. Thanks.

Most FRS/GMRS radios have NOAA weather receive capability, and they're a heck of a lot smaller than the radio in your link.

Because the antennas are a bit short for the 2m band, reception can be a bit spotty, but I've always been able to monitor a channel.

Take a look here.

Every modern handheld marine VHF I've ever seen has NOAA receive capability. Take a look at ICOM or Standard Horizon.

With the fact known that VHF radios have weather channels on them, it has become a quick and easy decision just to invest in a VHF radio. Thanks for the heads up Tampico :)
