Hello!

First time visitor to the park.

I'd like to come over on Saturday on the Voyageur II, and then Go back Sunday.

I'd like to do a difficult challenging hike and overnight camp in the backcountry. I'd love to see the lake and uphills are my favorite!

Any suggestions?

One option is to ask for a cross country permit for zone 21 or 22 and head out on the feltman trail untill youre tired find a spot to camp and return in the morning.

Huginnin Cove loop, camping at the cove, another option.

Hugging cove would likely be your best bet if your only coming for 1 night and want to hike. It wouldn't be a long hike but you'll be by the lake at night and get a great sunset.

Great! Thanks for the suggestions. Before we head down the trail to the cove from Windago, would there for any day hikes / areas of intwrest we should check near the harbour ( without our backpacks on) ???

I second Huginnin Cove, 4-5 miles one way. Not a terribly difficult trail or distance, but a great campground on the shore of Lake Superior. You could go to Feldtmann Lake, about 8 miles one-way if you want to push it, but that seems like a lot to me for an overnight.

I've never stayed at Washington creek (the camp sites at Windigo) but have heard that its a good spot to see Moose at. Perhaps walk through the campground on your way out. You'll get a feel for the shelters on the island and what it's like to stay in them. I kind of like reading the shelter Grafiti, some is pretty neat.

You'll get a good idea of the tent camping at Huggin Cove as there are no shelters there.

Also consider going into the Visitor center to check it out. It's pretty neat. Don't worry about bringing your water bottles filled on the boat. There is potable water from a spigot at windigo when you get off the boat. Remember to bring a water filter or pack lots of water as there is no potable water at hugging cove (or any sites other than Windigo or Rock Harbor).

Just got back from 3 days at camper cabins in Windigo..1st half day we did Hunginin Cove loop,,full day the 2nd day we did Rainbow Cove/Feldtmann Lake,Last day we went up to Sugar Mountain and checked out Washington Creek Campground in the eve for moose..No moose but it's a reliable spot..Over 40 miles in 2 1/2 days and my legs feel it..If I had a full day I would go up to Grace Creek Overlook on the way to Feldtmann(1.8 miles) then hike back and go to Hung Cove for the night..This was our 1st time at IR and I plan on doing a trip report with photos sometime this week..We will be back
