We will likely be making a short trip in August to Isle Royale. Out on Saturday and back in on Tuesday. Not long enough, but that's the way this summer works out.

My son is 9. Last time we went he was 6. We went from McCargo Cove to Chippwa harbor and had a good time. He says he's ready to do a little more walking this time. We'll see about that. Any other trip suggestions? We will be coming out of Grand Portage.

You could do the Feldtmann loop. My daughter and I did this in 4 days and 3 nights several years ago.

I'd say without a doubt, being that you do not have that much time and being that your 9 year old wants to do longer hikes...why not the Feldtmann Loop.

Saturday: Windigo to Feldtmann Lake
Sunday: Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit Lake
Monday: Siskiwit to Island Mine
Tuesday: Island Mine to Windigo

The only thing about this plan is there are no rest days if they turn out to be necessary. So if you do not like the sound of this plan, here is an alternative:

Saturday: Windigo to Huggininn Cove
Sunday: Huggininn Cove to Washington Creek
Monday: Washington Creek to Feldtmann Lake
Tuesday Feldtmann Lake to Windigo

This plan still does not allow for rest days either. So if this doesn't work try this on for size.

Saturday: McCargoe Cove to Todd Harbor
Sunday: Todd Harbor to Hatchet Lake
Monday: Hatchet Lake to Malone Bay
Tuesday: Malone Bay to Windigo/Home

Last plan....

Saturday: Rock Harbor to Three Mile
Sunday: Three Mile to Lane Cove
Monday: Lane Cove to Daisy Farm
Tuesday: Daisy Farm Home
