The site keeps saying it is not ready yet. Anyone know the best estimate of when reservations can be taken?

I'm not sure about the VII, but last month my wife made reservations out of Copper Harbor, Mi. Only thing is they charged us 2014 prices and we might have to pay the difference later.

Hopefully it will be in a week or less. The new system is very close, actually it is working fine in all the tests. The last issue to be solved is linking the online system, website and the cloud server, there has been some issues there that are being worked on as we speak. The news and events link on our homepage will be the place where it is announced and/or updated and I can post something here as well.
There was a major delay beyond our control that caused this, I assume the same delay affected the Queen as well.
Thanks to everyone for their patience as we work through this, it will happen soon.

Good news, the site is up and running. One little hick up that was handled quickly. Hopefully everyone will find the new system easier to navigate and less confusing than the past systems.

A question for the group before I reserve - how long does it usually take NPS to approve a group permit and do they actually let you know that it is approved?

Or, maybe the better question - does the boat fill up quickly and I should go ahead and book then change later if the drop off/pick up locations change because of permit changes? Or am I safe to wait before booking transport?

I can't tell you how long it will take to get a group permit approved, too long according to some I haved talked with in the past. None the less, you should NOT make boat reservations until you have the permit. It is too soon to tell what availability will be, but if you submit the permit app now you should have it in time to book with no problems, although no one can tell for certain. Booking before you have the permit can cause cancellation fees and other disappointments, I know that's not the answer you wanted, but it is the best way.

I sent the permit app about a month ago but have not heard anything yet. Figured I'd give a couple more weeks before I got too worried and called.

The park doesnt open until april 16. Maybe then you could expect to hear something from houghton. Thats still some time before the first boat heads over.

This is a direct quote from the current park website regarding their procedure for processing group camping permits:

"Isle Royale starts receiving group camping requests in January, those submitted in January will be randomly selected and processed starting February 1. Those requests received on or after February 1 will be processed in the order that they arrive in."

They also invite telephone or email inquires for assistance in trip planning. The phone number and email info is at the bottom of the linked page.

NPS is just getting ready now to start processing permits. I spoke with them last week.
