I had heard about this guy a few months ago *before* I went out to Isle Royale in MAY. It's a very cool (crazy?) adventure, and as far as the gentleman who performed it knows, the first time a crossing has ever been done.

Garrett lives in my town and I run into him from time to time. He's got a very animated way of telling the story that this article does not do justice to. My favorite part of the way he tells it, "yeah, a few times I had to get off my board and carry it across some ice bergs," and then "my legs got pretty cold having to sit on my board and paddle with my legs and feet in the water to get around the point near Duncan Bay...the wind was nasty and the waves were like 4-6 feet high."

Holy Wow is right, but if I read it correctly he abandoned the circumnavigation portion. He got as far as Mott Island (around Blake Point in 4-6 foot seas as you mentioned) where he was convinced to abort and then he got a ride to Windigo. From there he paddles home. I wonder if he'll be back.

Last month 5 guys did a SUP trip, 50 miles from WI to MI across northern Lake Michigan. They also were escorted by a flotilla of boats. It was for charity, but they did spend the night on the lake. I got a kick out of listening to a Chicago radio station this week. They were warning the Chicago beaches were too dangerous for swimming because the water temperature was only 65 degrees.
