Hello Fellow Isle Royale Enthusiasts!! I am new to this site and would like to say hello to everyone! My brother Ray, Nephew Paul, and I have been to the island 4 times now (2000,2001,2007,2008). Each trip is better than the previous, but each had there special moments.
Our trip in 2000 consisted of hiking only. We went to Three-Mile, Daisy Farm, Then to Moskey Basin, and Three-Mile, then back to Rock Harbor. It was an 8 Day trip. My 8YO Daughter went with us as well.
In 2001, we rented 2 small aluminum boats w/motors from Rock Harbor for the week! This gave us some more options and opened up alot more of the island to us. Same crew, with one additional family friend making the trip. We Stayed at Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin, Chippewa Harbor, Merritt Lane, and Tooker's Island. Perfect weather all week. I small incident. While Day hiking to Lake Ritchie, my 9YO Daughter Alyssa was walking along the trail and had her walking stick over her shoulders with her hands an each end. She tripped on a root or rock and went head first into the ground. Because her hands were up on her walking stick, she wasnt able to reach down to absorb the blow and she hit hard. I thought she broke her nose, so we headed back to RH in the boat, and saw a medic there. He said it wasnt broke, but she looked like someone gave her 2 black eyes and her nose and face was scraped up pretty good. But she was a trooper, and after the medic gave us some Mycatracin, we headed back to moskey. By the time we left the island, its was not even noticable.
After a 6 year break from the island, with a trip to Quetico in 2006, we made it back in June-July 2007. this time it was just 3 of us. Myy Brother Ray, Nephew Paul, and I. I bought a 17.5ft Lowe w/115hp in 2006 so we decided to take our boat! Now we could see even more of the island (RH only allows rentals to go as far as Chippewa to the west and Blake Point to the east). We made it to Daisy Farms for a night, Chippewa Harbor for a night (great Pike fishing), then Duncan Bay narrows, for a night, Belle Isle for 2 nights, Birch Island for 2 nights, and finally Tooker's Island on the last night. Another great trip with perfect weather all week (it only rained for maybe 3 hours one day and that was it!) Highlight of this trip was seeing a Fox family near there den on the shoreline near Duncan Bay Narrows, Catching a 39" Northern in McCargoe Cove, catching and eating Lake Trout at Belle Isle), and Meeting one of the life-leasee's on the island by the name of Brian (Merritt) Bergson. (his Grandfather, Glen Merritt, purchase approx. 20 island in and around Tobin Harbor for the price of $10.00 per acre) He invited us to stay with him this year! His family still has a cabin on the island just west on Minong (Hotel) Island.
The 3 of returned again June 27th - July 5th, 2008. This time with a new boat. We had kept in touch with Brian Merritt during the winter, and as luck would have it, he was heading over the same time as us. He invited us to stay at the Merritt Cabin and we accepted. We stayed at his cabin the first two nights. He took us out trolling for Lake Trout near the Palisades and Lock Pointe. Paul caught a 3lber and a 6 lber. Great tasting fish indeed! We then had to try Chippewa again, one of my favorite sites, to catch some Chippewa Pike. I ended up catching the first Pike, a whopper of fish that measured 43" and weight est. 22lbs. Caught him trolling with the large 7 inch Perch colored Original Rapala. Ended up catching 5 more, all 27-34 inchers. The 4th night we stayed at Siskiwit Bay, another beautiful site. Saw a large Bull Moose on the hike up to Feltdmann fire Tower Lookout. On our 5th night we stayed at Malone Bay. Great site, with a great water fall. Paul had a fox come within10 feet from him while sitting on the picnic table at our shelter. On the 5th & 6th night we stayed at Birch Island, with one day of fishing for nNorthern Pike, which we ended up catching 24 in Mccargoe Cove and Brady Cove. biggest was 36" 13.5lbs. On our second day at Birch Island we made a day trip over to Todd Harbor and checked out the area. There is a small Mine pit near there at the Haytown mine site and a waterfall as well. On the last night we stayed at Caribou Island. We were to meet up with Rolf & Candy Peterson on this day. I manage a Battery store and I donated 3 batteries last year to Rolf & Candy for their new wind turbine, so i wanted to chec it out and make sure all was well. I had also wanted to give him a couple of camera batteries he needed as well. It was neat to spend some time chatting with them. Lots of great stories and Candy made us Muffins! Thank you Candy! We explored the Ojibway Lake area after our visit to the Peterson's, then we anchored in the very back of Conglomerate Bay before heading in for the evening. Weather was great again, as it only rained on the first two nights, which worked out nicely as we were high and dry in the Merritt Cabin. Only incident was we lost our landing net, broke my fishfinders transducer mount, and I lost my brand new Hydrofoil on my engine (should of used Lock-tite).
Here are some photos from 2007 and 2008. I wil post a complet journal of my trip real soon!
Regards,
Isle Royale Rob
