When I took my son on his first back country trip, I made him count paces and use a map and compass to plot the trip r\progress. He grumbled the whole time about not being able to use a GPS. For his 16th we went to Yosemite and then it became a bit more of a game with all the landmarks that made it easier to orient yourself. Batteries go dead. Electronics get wet, dropped and/or have gremlins. Everyone should know the basics of map and compass work.
