Hello all,
I am planning a backpacking trip of Isle Royale for a group of 7 and I was wondering if averaging 12 miles a day on Isle Royale is unrealistic. We are training for the trip but I was curious how long it takes to cross the island and return to where we started in Rock Harbor.

What sort of hiking and backpacking experience does your crew have? Where have they hiked?
It depends on your answers, but in general I would not count on averaging 12 miles per day. That's pushing it a lot on rugged terrain, and doesn't leave you with a lot of wiggle room in case of weather or injury (or just need for rest!).

Remember, you could hike the length of the island from Rock Harbor to Windigo, then catch the Voyageur II back to Rock Harbor. Reservations required.

And remember, if you are traveling as a group of 7-10, there are other guidelines to consider.

You could hike out as far as Hatchet Lake, take the cut-off trail, and take a different route back to Rock Harbor.

12 is fine if everyone is practicing, but always have a backup plan is weather or wear and tear mess you up. Also don’t forget that little Todd and north desor do not have group sites.
