Fire ban
Due to drought conditions, the NPS has instituted a fire ban on IR. No fires of any kind are allowed including campfires, and cooking fires anywhere on the Island. Fuel cook stoves and twig stoves are ok.

From the above link;
"Fire Restrictions in EffectDue to ongoing drought conditions and elevated levels of fire danger, all park areas are closed to the lighting and maintaining of wood or charcoal fires. Self-contained gas, propane, and twig stoves are allowed"

Re: Fire ban
Yes it includes the grills. Just got off the island. Rangers were walking campsite to campsite letting people know when it happened. Didn’t see anyone breaking the rules after the ban. However, someone sadly thought it was ok to have a fire in one of the tent spots on feltdmann. Burnt earth and sticks. Sad.

Re: Fire ban
I just don't understand how people can think the rules somehow don't apply to them with something so clear cut and obvious to others as a campfire. I wonder if anyone saw it and said anything to them.thesneakymonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jul 18, 2021 9:47 am Yes it includes the grills. Just got off the island. Fire ban update from the NPS (looks to be more info on gas stoves needed):
Due to ongoing drought conditions and elevated levels of fire danger, all park areas are closed to the lighting and maintaining of wood fires. Charcoal fires are only allowed in grills at Rock Harbor, Windigo, and Mott Island. Self-contained gas, propane

The Greenwood fire started yesterday near the BWCA. Today the fire is over 1000 acres.
By the end of the day the fire was at 2000 acres.

Re: Fire ban
The Greenwood Lake fire has grown to 4000 acres as of 8/18. There is also a new fire, the Moose Lake fire. If there was a 4000 acre fire on IR, it would be devastating.

Re: Fire ban
And as of this afternoon in the BWCAW, they have closed Sawbill Lake and everything west and northwest from Sawbill, because the Whelp Fire has doubled in size. You can still daytrip on Sawbill or East from Sawbill, but no overnight permits for at least three days. That’s a huge entry point to close! How is the Duncan Portage Fire doing?
