Horne Fire

Post by johnhens »

Currently the Horne fire is burning near the Duncan-Tobin portage. Form the NPS:

Fire Restrictions
Due to ongoing drought conditions and elevated levels of fire danger, all park areas are closed to the lighting and maintaining of wood fires. Charcoal fires are only allowed in grills at Rock Harbor, Windigo, and Mott Island. Self-contained gas, propane, alcohol, and twig stoves are allowed.

Fires
The Horne fire near the shore of Duncan Bay by the Tobin-Duncan Portage is less than one acre in size and being monitored by park staff.

According to the NPS, the fire has been contained. 15 acres in size, west of the Duncan-Tobin portage.

Looks like the Horne Fire has taken off. A screenshot from the Mott Island cam at about 11:00 PM Saturday. Flames and smoke are obvious.

Just left Rock Harbor after a week on the island. Last night was pretty wild watching the smoke billow from the ridge just the other side of Tobin Harbor. Will have more in a TR later this week but here’s a couple pics from the plane as we left.

I can’t help feeling angry to see this. Anyone that spent even a day hiking on the Greenstone should have seen how dangerous any kind of fire could be. You’d have to be a complete idiot to start a fire in those conditions.

NPS had shut down Stoll Trail and the Tobin Harbor docks this morning as a precaution. Winds were shifting around to the north.

The NPS/IR fire policy is to let naturally occurring fires burn (this fire is said to have been started by lightning) provided they do not threaten any structures. Any idea of the size now? Is the NPS taking action on the fire?

No idea of the size now. A ranger told us this morning that it had jumped to Long Island and was threatening one of the historic cottages. Fire crews worked all night and were able to save the cottage. He confirmed they were not battling the main part of the fire but were potentially bringing in more crews in case it moves toward any other structures.

We had heard early in the week this was started by a lone backpacker who just had to have a campfire but I can’t confirm that.

That's over 1.5 miles east of the portage. Did it move that far overnight? Also looks like smoke near Scoville Pt.

Sounds like it's 200 acres now. Winds were strong yesterday.

This is a good spot to follow along https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/ ... royale.htm

The NPS has 2 SEAT planes attacking the fire with water drops.

200+acres is a respectable fire. The wind direction seems to have changed. Yesterday it was blowing south. Today, it's blowing north. Which means some of the flames will be blowing back onto already burned land. Already making plans to visit the island next summer. I have to walk through this burned area and look for forest regeneration.

The moose will love this area with the new growth. May seem them in there now eating ash for minerals.

You can even see the fire from space. A screen shot from today's MODIS imagery.

I see snow is still on the Greenstone.

The imagery of all the fires going on right now is quite disturbing. The BWCA fires offer some perspective.
