I got to thinking. What songs do you sing while hiking or paddling? Here are two I find myself singing while paddling:
1. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
2. You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore (And this one have on an engraved plastic plaque on the deck of my boat):
You have come down to the lakeshore
Seeking neither the wise nor the wealthy,
But only asking for me to follow.
Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes,
Kindly smiling, you've called out my name.
On the sand I've abandoned my small boat;
Now with you, I will seek other seas.
PS JohnH...Don't go there!!!

During my '07 solo, I specifically recall singing Men At Work's "Overkill" and "London Calling" by the Clash to myself while I hiked from McCargoe Cove to Moskey Basin. I'm not sure why those two songs were in my head at the time.
I also can rip through a good portion of the Beatles' library while on the trail. Mostly post-1966 stuff.

Let's see Nick singing (or what ever he calls it)....
I think I prefer the squaking of seagulls.

I would second Nick's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and throw in "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash

My Dad always sang "By the Light of the Silvery Moon". Ever since my first BWCA trip with him, I can't get keep it out of head when I paddle. This has haunted me for almost 40 years

! Damn, I'm not going to be able to sleep now--thanks niners

.
[edited] Sorry niners, that should be "thanks Nick

" who started the thread.

Auditory viruses are nasty things. Why even now, I picture JohnH in my mind and immediately think of the the intro to the Muppet Show---he's Fozzy Bear....

Now, those of you who've read this are infected. You'll be humming this tune in your mind until some other virus comes along to replace it.

A few years ago, my daughter gave me a sure fire method for getting rid of Auditory Viruses: Circus Music! When a song gets stuck in your head and you want it out, just start humming circus music. It works every time. I have not figured out how to get rid of the circus music though!

For some reason, when I'm on the Greenstone nearing Windigo, Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" won't leave my head.
Otherwise I'm blank.
