Winter Study 2022 is underway. Form the NPS page:
The park's winter research program for 2022 has taken flight!
Scientists and support staff reached Windigo last week after being delayed due to weather, COVID-19, and last-minute changes to planning to ensure everyone's safety. Conditions have been very cold. 16” of ice was measured in Washington Harbor! Even so, there isn’t a lot of snow on the ground. Soft, powdery snow gives way to no base layer (at least in the immediate Windigo area). Days have been spent preparing for the day-to-day logistics that winter research requires, and as weather conditions improve, on the ground and aerial data collection will ensue.
More updates from the field will be shared as we have them.
