It's too bad (if it's true) that she didn't find this forum when she was poking around the internet before the trip---she seems like she would have appreciated how we roll. But very obviously, the trip went fine without us (if it did)!

Re: another imported trip report
I always appreciate these trip reports, especially as I look outside at the 6+ inches of snow (still falling!). The forums have seemed pretty quiet lately; hopefully they pick up soon as people start to dream up next year's trips. (And I hope they find the forums, I find this much friendlier than the weird arguments that go on in Facebook!)

Nice report. I hadn't realized there were so many "moldering privies" on the island.

That struck me as well. My two hypotheses were:backwoods doc wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 10:41 am Nice report. I hadn't realized there were so many "moldering privies" on the island.
(i) in the author's taxonomy, if you're a privy, you're either moldering or composting. And the IR privies aren't composting.
(ii) There was something Homeric going on. It's always "the wine dark sea" in the Odyssey and the Iliad because it scans---the poetic meter comes out right. Ditto "long-suffering brilliant Odysseus," etc., etc. Maybe the author was writing in a meter where ``moldering privies" scanned?
Whatever the explanation, I enjoyed the numerous appearances of moldering privies.
dcclark, I used to make feeble and ineffectual efforts to get people, ones who seemed like they might be interested in thoughtful, contextualized consideration of questions they posted to facebook, to come here. I think the draw of easily posted pictures was too much for me to overcome.

torpified,
Excellent hypotheses, though I sense just a hint of cynicism.
You must have to really restrain yourself when grading papers.

Re: another imported trip report
Forgive me...
Long-suffering Odysseus sat upon the mouldering privy.
His shoulders ached, his feet complained.
His thoughts returned to his long voyage,
along the lakeshore he had marched,
across the Greenstone he had climbed.
Brave Odysseus sat looking through the broken door,
his thoughts turned to the blue-green lake.
He pondered his future, he wondered aloud,
"Why did I stop at East Chickenbone?"
