We are receiving forest fire smoke here in Ohio, from the fires in Western Canada. Are you folks in Minnesota and Wisconsin also being affected by them? If so, I suppose Isle Royale is receiving smoke too.

Yes, we've had some interesting orangish-sunlight here in lower Michigan. No smell of smoke though. I'd imagine the island has the same thing.

Also orangish sun here in southern Wisconsin. There have been air quality alerts off and on recently as well.

My buddy just shared this with me last night. These were taken in the northern part of the upper peninsula (Ontonagon). So, hopefully, the Canadian wildfire smoke has cleared the area. I'm hoping we see not only a sky full of stars and the Milky Way, but also some shimmering northern lights during this trip.

Since this thead hasn't been updated in a while I presume there is little to no smoke on the rock as of mid July?

Unfortunately the National Weather Service has an air quality alert for today, July 15. It covers the island (and most surrounding mainland) due to Canadian forest fire smoke:
