GMRS Communcation

Post by WiscoDude3 »

Just out of curiosity, does anyone carry a GMRS radio while on the island?

When I was there last year, I didn't see anyone with a radio.

Haven’t seen it. Only reason I might consider is if there was a slower hiker who lagged and I was concerned about for safety reasons. Even then not terribly reliable, I think.

I have used GMRS radios for hiking (high Sierra) and for canoeing in the Boundary Waters, to communicate mostly when we arrived at a destination lake and split up with different canoes checking out different campsites. They were marginally effective, but they did work well enough for the groups to justify carrying them. For solo, or for small groups that tend to stick together, they are not on my list of essential.
