So, I decided last night that I should take advantage of an open window of time. Last night was Friday. I called the IR transportation office yesterday to see if any boats were full in the next couple weeks, and I was told no, at that time, each boat had at least a couple spots open. But I couldn't commit to a date at that time, not until after they were closed for the weekend. In other words, not until after I could talk to my wife.

So I'm going to take a chance, drive up to Grand Portage tomorrow (Sunday) and hope to get on the boat without prior reservations. And hope the return date has an opening for me too. If it's full, I can hike the SHT for a couple days. Crossing my fingers.

Anyone want to tell me I'm crazy for hoping for empty spots on that boat?

Normally I plan more than this, but time opened up.

In 2006 I did just what you're doing, nothing stupid about it. They had a spot for me.
