2010 Trip Transportaiton Planning

Post by yukonjack2 »

Our Boy scout troop is currently planning a visit in Early August 2010. In planning the Itinerary, I was looking for some transportation questions. We are travelling out of Copper Harbor MI and starting at Rock Harbor.

I would like to arrange tranportation across the harbor over to hiddne lake, and make a stop at Louise lookout on our way to
Lane Cove the first night. this seems to not be too far of a hike (approx 8 miles), and away from the pack of hikers off the boat. My concerns are:

Who/how do I arrange in advance travel to Hiddne Lake from RH - is it the MV Sandy?
When does it run? as we want enough time the first day to get to Lane Cove.
Approximate costs?
does it run every day, or only certain days?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a great itinerary planned out, but need the jaunt across the Harbor to get started with enough daylight to make it to Lane Cove the first night.

thanx

Hi yukonjack2,

Looks like the Sandy sight-seeing tour leaves Rock Harbor on Tues. and Thurs. mornings, which may not be the most convenient. The water taxi is more flexible as it can be reserved in advance to your schedule (if not already booked), but it is limited to a maximum of 6 people at a time.

Cost for the Sandy in 2009 was $15.50 each; cost for the 2009 taxi was $60 + $4/person above 2 (max of 6). Depending on how many are riding, the cost between the two can be fairly close, and given the convenience factor the water taxi may be the preferred way to go.

You can check out details for both at the lodge website: http://www.isleroyaleresort.com.

How many are in your group? Six or less you are good to go, 6-10 you count as a group, and more than 10 you need to split into multiple parties with different routes. Groups have special requirements, which include staying at group sites only. Since Lane Cove does not have group sites, I'm assuming you are 6 or less in your party. If you do need to find out about group requirements, you can checkout http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/u ... 0Guide.pdf.

Have you visited the island before? Go ahead and post the itinerary you are planning and I'm sure you'll get lots of friendly input. Many of us on here feel that the island is a special place and enjoy talking about it (especially between seasons!)
