Re: Breakfast in houghton !!!
I agree that the Suomi is the place for breakfast. You have to try the Pannu Kakkua (Finnish pancake).

Re: Isle Royale First Timers
Your adjusted plan is also very doable. As I stated earlier, the climb out of LC is very steep. I have done RH to LC on the first day of a trip and then as the last day of a trip. My older son went w/ me when we did it as the first day (he has never been back) but when I made it the last day of the ...

Re: Isle Royale First Timers
While some might consider this an aggressive trip, it is doable. I agree that the hike from McCargo to Lane Cove will be long w/out water. Your last stop will be East Chickenbone. The climb out of Lane is steep but you should be able to get to Rock Harbor w/ plenty of time to spare. The last time I ...

Re: 1st Time on IR -- Itinerary Help!
I completed that same hike 4 years ago but w/ an extra day. Everything that has been said about the difficulty of your agenda is correct but it sounds like you have been preparing for this. I would suggest a few changes to you plan.

WIFI availability
I was reading the posts regarding the availability of WiFi @ Windigo and RH but all of them were from last year. Has anyone been to IR recently (I will be there from 7/18-7/25) and used the WiFi @ either end? I am just looking to send an email home. Thanks

Re: Need advice on first time itinerary...
I have done this same trip on several different visits and never tire of views. Once with Lane Cove as our first night and another time with Lane Cove as our last night on the island. It was much better having Lane Cove as our last night. The trail out of Lane Cove is rather steep and we found that ...

Re: Winter Study 2011
It would appear, from the most recent postings by the Winter Study group, that there is now only one pack and several lone wolves on IR. See most recent posting)
They also discuss the impact that may have in the future. Great read.

Re: Affordable Lightweight Tent?
I have used two different tents on IR and the Boundary Waters. The half dome from REI is OK but my son and I find it a little tight. (He is 6'4" and I am 6'3") It's not the length that we find tight but the width. Two trips ago, I bought the Kelty Gunnison 3.1 and have found it a great fit for the ...

Re: Place to stay in Copper Harbor
When taking the Queen, we stay @ King Copper. We like the idea that it is so close to the dock and that we can walk to the Pines for breakfast and still be back in time for the departure.

Re: Itinerary Help - 4 nights from RH
Keweenaw is right about Lane Cove. You don't want to miss it and you should have plenty of time to leave Lane Cove and get to RH before the Queen departs. I did the same thing the last time I camped @ Lane Cove and we arrived in RH w/ enough time to shower and do a load of laundry before catching ...
