Re: Proposed user fee increase

It wouldn't hold me back from going. They've got to keep pace with fees at other parks, plus it's a small price to pay when you look at the big picture of all the other costs (transportation etc) when you plan a trip there. Or I'll tag along with Donk_67 :) .

Grand Island, Michigan 2012

I had the opportunity to head up there solo for 4 days, 3 nights July 26-29th, 2012. First of all, the weather was perfect....70's & 80's during the day, mid 60's at night and I never used my deet, but I did use my mosquito net at night with my hammock. Good information is available at this link ...

Re: Porkies 3 nighter?

In Jujne of 2011 we did a 3 night 4 day trip to the Porkies, utilizing the rental cabins and had a great time. The rental cabins all have rustic sites within a quarter to half mile away. Here's our route: Lake of the Clouds overlook down to Buckshot cabin along the Superior shore, next day head down ...

Grand Island was awesome and a great place to go on my first 4 day solo hike. I couldn't ask for any better weather! I'm starting to work on a trip report that I'll post in the "Other Places-Grand Island" topic. Unfortunately, the park service has closed the Northeast (aka Freighter View) site, but ...

Great trip report! I've followed the blackcoffeeatsunrise for a couple years and really enjoy them. Last year my daughter and I used your Porkies trip as our guide when we were there in June 2011. Next month we're heading to S. Manitou and using your wife's guide too. In 2 days I'm leaving for Grand ...

Re: Pictured Rocks!

My buddy and I did the trip this past October 2012. We went from Log Slide to Munising Falls (37.5 miles, 2 1/2 days) and really enjoyed it. We had planned on an extra day, but when we got to our last nights site at Cliffs, it wasn't too impressive and the thought of pasties, Keewanaw Amber Ale and ...

Last year I got a great pair of Asolo boots with my rebate, coupon and some cash that have carried me well. This year my wife is claiming the rebate, unless I can get to the mail first  .

Re: Training or shakedown trail suggestion SE Michigan

I do the overnight to Blind Lake a couple times a year at Pinckney and it really is a great trip. Since you go to Highland Rec Area, another 10 minutes east on m-59 puts you at Pontiac Lake. The outer loop is about 9 miles and there's some nice climbs that will give you a workout. Trails are in ...

Re: What are your winter plans?

Back to snowshoeing for the winter to keep me in somewhat decent shape. I've got a couple state recreation areas within 15 minutes of my house giving me plenty of options for 3-12 mile loops. Sometimes I'll pack the tarp and stove and take a nice break midway through my trip. I'm going to try a ...

Re: Good Trail Food site

Try the "Bangers and Mash" from Pack-it Gourmet. Best rehydrated potatoes in the world!!! I also liked the berry-berry breakfast smoothies, but my daughter thought they tasted more like crumbs in dirty water. Tons of protein too. For cocktails, the moonshine margarita and the mudslide were very well ...

I took advantage of my dividend last week and bought a pair of Lowa Zephyr boots. Between my dividend and the member coupon, it cost me $100 bucks! Can't wait to get out on the trail soon.

Re: Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails and Water Routes

I picked the new edition of Jim's book through his website before Christmas and he wrote a nice note to me in the front of the book. I highly recommend the book for anyone planning a trip to ISRO. The maps are detailed and the written trail guides are a great information resource.

Re: Handheld GPS units on IR

Back in June I purchased my GPS and decided on the wrist mounted Garmin Foretrex 401 GPS (http://www.rei.com/product/790321 $200). I had a met a hiker on the Manistee Trail who was using one and I was sold. Note, this unit will show your speed/distance/time/compass/elevation/ position and tracks ...

Re: Porcupine Mtns one of 10 Best State Parks

After browsing the forums, researching and consulting with my 12 year old daughter on where she wants to go next, I purchased "Porcupine Mountains: Wilderness State Park, A Backcountry Guide for Hikers, Backpackers, Campers, and Winter Visitors" (Jim DuFresne, author). We've since booked a 4 day ...
