Re: Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?
Additional info As I and guests were preparing evening meal, a stranger appeared at the door saying they wanted to bring their 20 some foot sailboat to the dock, and that they could raft to the boat moored to the face of the dock. I informed him that i could not nor would not give them permission to ...

Suggestion re: user name. Make it a double "f", change the "k" to a "t", add a first initial "G", and it would be perfectly self expressive.

Re: Wright Island
RE; Wright Islands Only one building remains at "Wrights", the historic "main" log cabin. Although daytime docking is allowed there, the site is still an inholding of Karen Holte, whose maternal Grandfather, Sam Johnson, fished from and occupied the property . Sam occupied Wrights from the late 1800 ...

Re: Rescue of the Grampa Woo
Interesting that Jim Marshalls article on the Grampa Woo should resurface after 14 years. Jim, bless his soul and memory, was not only the publisher of Lake Superior magazine, but a very capable and experienced navigator and boat operator on Lake Superior. That being said, it would appear that he may ...

Re: Cultural Resources Management Plan
To the best of my knowledge there have been no inholder "eviction" notices at this time although the language in the letters received from NPS last June by the permit holders was interpreted by some to be such, if not immediate then near future. Maintenance of the historical inholder sites has in ...

Re: Bob Janke obituary
Thanks for the update on Bob Janke. I first met Bob in his early years on IR, then as one of his physics students, then again on the Island from the 80's on. Whether in the classroom or on the island Bob was the consumate gentleman, always making time for a cordial and often informative visit. He ...

Re: What has caused the decline in the beaver population?
Although there may a number of contributing factors, wolf predation is most certainly a major one. Historically beaver nested yearly in and around Fishermans Home, until about 2000, when the beaver house was found to have been "dug out" over the winter. Beaver have not been there since. In addition ...

Re: Lake Holloran
Cabin on west end of lake. According to my father/Grandfather, Halloran would, if not usually at least occasionally beach a small boat on the lakeshore inside of McCormicks trolling reef (not to be confused with McCormick Rocks) then make the relatively short cross country hike to Halloran Lake from ...

Re: Lake Holloran
Haven't been there in many decades so information is somewhat dated. As mdenys suggested, even though its a relatively short distance from the Feldtman Ridge trail it can be challenging, especially if it hs been a rather wet season. We usually were able to follow a moose "trail" to access the lake ...

Re: Kayak Circumnavigation Aug 16-22 2009
Russ; My apology for what was apparently a case of mistaken identity. To explain: Many paddlers enter the harbor at Fishermans Home, some merely look around from their boats and continue on their way, others come ashore. Within a few days of your visit two paddlers did arrive, come ashore, join us ...

Re: Kayak Circumnavigation Aug 16-22 2009
correction to last post- blame it on a senior moment. Should have read "remember Harry Truman who lived in the shadow of Mount St. Helens". As I recall, Art Carney played the part of Harry in a film about the Mt, St. Helens eruption.

Re: Kayak Circumnavigation Aug 16-22 2009
It is interesting that one misleading caption on a number of great photo's submitted by Russ has spawned this many responses. For clarification: There are 3 basic agreements at IR which allow individual inholdings, life lease, special use permits, and volunteer in park. Special use permits [as the ...

re; "not so friendly fishing village" The paddlers arrived Fishermans Home [a "private" inholding on IRNP] at the time a potluck evening meal was being enjoyed by all. When one of the invited guests offered to help remove one of the kayaks from the water he was told -don't touch my kayak -and ...
