2022 Opening Interview on WTIP
Here's a link to a story and audio of an interview with Liz Valencia of IRNP conducted on April 30 by WTIP radio in Grand Marais, MN. The primary topic is the 2022 opening of the park in light of the late spring and ice this year. Hopefully the harbors will clear before May 14, the first scheduled ...

Re: I saw a Pine Marten (I think)
For what it's worth I saw a pine martin the third week of May 2015 at Washington Creek campground (Windigo). It strolled through our camp (shelter #1) following the shore with a red squirrel in its mouth. About 10 mins later it swam across the creek and disappeared into the woods. Reported it to ...

Re: Bike on the V2
My wife rode our tandem bike from Copper Harbor to Grand Portage in August of 2011. We then traveled with the bike on the V II to RH and the next day took the Queen back to Copper Harbor to retrieve our car. One minor correction to the above: As long as we were on the island for just the one night ...

Re: Current conditions on the island
Current conditions update posted on the IRKPA facebook page (link above): "The National Park Service advises that campers and visitors to Isle Royale National Park should be prepared for winter camping conditions on the island for the next few weeks. Most docks are ice bound, and shore access is ...

Re: Name that Boat! A contest
My suggestion is "Stanley" after long-time and much-loved former captain of the Wenonah, Stanley Sivertson.

MPLS Star Trib editorial on eviction notices to leasholders
Today's Minneapolis Star Tribune (Aug 29, 2010) has an interesting editorial about eviction notices sent to eight of the current leaseholders (including the Sivertsons). Link:

Re: East Feldtmann Trail
I hiked the East Feldtmann Trail a couple of times in the 80's before it was closed. It was slightly more scenic and shorter than the current Feldtmann Trail (then called the West Feldtmann Trail). Unless you are willing to get wet, I wouldn't try to bushwack it as the trail went through the swamp ...
