Re: Gps recomendations

I have a DeLorme PN-60 with both satellite and 1:24000 USGS topo maps downloaded for the whole island. One time I went to IR with 2 friends (brothers). We had planned to completely circle the island. The brothers decided to go on down to Washington Creek instead of taking the Siskiwit loop. I gave ...

Re: Stick Stove Suggestions and Reviews

I used a Solo Stove last August on my hike around IR. I did carry a few Esbit tabs for backup. The Solo, like the Bushbuddy, is completely self contained. So no ashes fall on the ground and the surface under the stove does not get hot. I have used the Solo on several picnic tables, first the one on ...

Re: dehyrated dinner gone bad

Did you contact Mountain House to explain the problem? About 10 years ago I found several old packages with expiration dates a few years previous. I sent an email and had an answer less than w week later. Now I dehydrate my own. On a side note, I was at a wilderness medicine class recently. The ...

Re: Trip planning is underway

I've done most of that trip in reverse as part of a longer hike three times.

Sometimes the creek at Island Mine is low or even dry. You will pass another creek about 1/4 mile before Island Mine CG. That one has had good flow everytime I've been through there.

Re: Alcohol Stoves

Last August I hiked for two weeks on IR. I used a Solo twig burning stove each night. I carried both Alcohol and Esbit as backup for mornings and rainy weather. All three systems worked just fine. Soot in my pack was not a problem. Both my Solo stove and the small kettle came with a stuff sack which ...

Re: Rock Harbor to Little Todd and back in 4 nights

I would agree with INGO. OTOH, I'm more of a hiker. I would want five FULL days. Little Todd is not the greatest place to camp. I would suggest Todd Harbor instead - and a little more time.

Re: packraft Chippawa Harbor thru inland lakes

I've revised and refined a tentative schedule with extra days for possible problems: 7/7/1 Drive from home to Copper Harbor 7/2 Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor via Isle Royale Queen 7/2 Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm hike - 7.8 miles 7/3 Daisy Farm to Lake Richie Hiker CG – hike 7.6 miles 7/4 Lake Richie H ...

Re: packraft Chippawa Harbor thru inland lakes

Thanks for the two quick replies. The packraft + PFD + paddle adds 8 lb which will give me a total pack weight of about 35 lb. I will add two more days for the same route based on your advice. Then, if needed I can hike a longer day to make up time and distance. The packraft is quite stable but very ...

packraft Chippawa Harbor thru inland lakes

I'm planning my next (4th) trip to IR and thought I might try a different way. I have a packraft but I'm primarily a hiker. I would start at Rock Harbor Day 1 - Rock Harbor hike to Lake Richie, Day 2 - Paddle across lake to Indian Portage Trail & hike to Chippewa Harbor camp, Day 3 - Paddle west to ...

Re: Hat & Camera Question

I agree with your parents. I wear a broad brimmed hat for all my hiking. It is often very windy on IR, so I suggest a hat with at least a chin strap. I've been wearing a Tilley for several years, with the strap both front and back. It protects my face, ears and neck from the sun. The broad brim also ...

Re: Hammock Camping?

I had planned to use a hammock on a previous trip. I made the mistake of calling and asking. The lady I talked with said hammocks are not allowed.
The first night at 3 Mile the young guy in the next site was using a hammock.

Re: Stove and fuel choices

My first trip to IR we used white gas. The second trip we used Canister stoves. Next month I will use a Solo stove woodburner with alcohol as backup. Most likely I will use wood each night and alcohol for morning coffee. I've been using this system for over two years. Alcohol is NOT sold on the ...

Re: New Boots (Pains)

Can you return the boots? I haven't had much luck ordering boots. I would not keep boots that made my feet sore. I wore trail runners my last trip to Isle Royale. They are much more comfortable than leather boots and need no breakin time. If you really want to keep the boots the quick way is as ...
