Last August I hiked for two weeks on IR. I used a Solo twig burning stove each night. I carried both Alcohol and Esbit as backup for mornings and rainy weather. All three systems worked just fine. Soot in my pack was not a problem. Both my Solo stove and the small kettle came with a stuff sack which I always use. When using wood for fuel I never walked more than 50 feet from my stove to get all I needed.
The next time I use the Solo stove I will just carry a few Esbit tabs for backup when it rains.
