Re: Isle Royale Queen III returns to Lake Superior
The Queen II was single-handedly responsible for causing me to treat all water vessels with a great deal of suspicion and trepidation. Canoes. Aircraft carriers turned into museums. You name it.

Re: Aurora borealis makes a rare area appearance in Chicago
My first trip to IR, I was with the Scouts on High Adventure. I was fortunate to have my dad as Scout Master, and on that trip in particular. I could go on and on how this was a formative trip for me both as a young teen and in my relationship with my father. One of my most vivid memories though was ...

Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
I'll be on the island Aug 4-11. Flying in to Windigo. My itinerary is on the calendar, but I messed it up (you can see, I plan on doing two different hikes on Sunday...impossible, especially for me). Looks like it'll be pretty busy, especially around the middle of the island around Hatchet Lake ...

Re: Solo Hiker
I'll be hiking solo for my first time, but from the Windigo side, Aug. 4 - 11. I'll be doing the Feldtman Lake trail back to Windigo the first leg, then the Minong back to Windigo on the Greenstone via Hatchet Lake. I'm expecting to learn a lot of lessons on my first solo trek, just hoping the rain ...

Re: Trail selection from Daisy Farm to Rock Harbor
When people use words like "rocky" to describe the Rock Harbor trail, I don't think it emphasizes the point enough. Don't get me wrong - it is a fun, beautiful hike. But the rocks come in all shapes and sizes, on up to boulders that are literally part of the trail. It's hard on your feet and, as ...

Re: Starting to worry!
I'll be arriving the 4th in Windigo, leaving the 11th remaining on that end of the island the entire time. For your sake and mine, I hope that the mosquitoes won't be a disastrous problem. I will say that I've been there once in August and once in very early September and we never had a problem with ...

Re: Greenstone Hike
Wow! Thanks for pointing out the tumpline concept. This would be helpful on those hikes up to the ridge from camp, or to simply offer other parts of your body a break from the weight of your pack.
