Re: New food storage regulations

Re: Long Weekend Loop Midwest
The Manistee River Trail can form a loop with the North Country Trail. Right now the bridge that makes this possible is closed for repairs, which were supposed to be completed in six weeks last fall. It's still closed, and there is no published date for completion. You may be able to work with NCT ...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2025 edition
I'm going to spend all $3.39 toward a 10-liter Ursack AllMitey Bear and Critter Sack, before my squirrel luck runs out.

Re: New food storage regulations
I've used an Ursack on the mainland before (and like it). One of its key features is that you don't have to hang it -- you can tie it to a tree trunk, or picnic table leg, etc. I assume that would be an acceptable use on the island as well.
Technically, only some of the Ursacks are both bear ...

Re: New food storage regulations
The Park seems to be thinking there are solutions that are not the bulky bear canisters but are not willing to go too far out that limb. Certainly, a wolf & squirrel system, even if it were engineered certifiable, should not be near as bulky as the canisters.
Both Adotec and Ursack bags are on ...

Has TP distribution even happened since at least 2020?
During my trip last September, I met a couple of law enforcement rangers. Our first encounter happened while they were looking for a female hiker who'd become separated from her hiking partner ("No, I'm not Elaine" was a bit of a running joke ...

So inane that if you know better, you can snag a shelter before the end of the briefing!

Re: Snowshoe Tracks????
Perhaps, but it seems unlikely that those tracks would be visible on the camera.
And the size of the tracks we do see seem to indicate something larger.

Re: Current water availability: Greenstone Ridge trail?
Although there are no current blue-green algae alerts on any inland lake (such as Chickenbone), one shouldn't eliminate that possibility this time of year.

Re: Impossible logistics
For readers, the current one-night stay limit at Rock Harbor is in effect through September 21.
I'd plan to hike to Three Mile (also a one-night stay limit) for the first night and then hike back to Rock Harbor for the second night.
It's an easy enough hike.

Re: Overnight camping with a bike
Last year in Rock Harbor was the first time I saw a bike rack next to the public kayak rack (which is close to the visitor center and the marina). Signage about carts and bikes was posted at the edge of the campground.
