Waterproof matches/lighter on your person is critical if you overturn on Lake Superior waters, and make it to shore without all your gear. An emergency fire will probably be needed to help avoid hypothermia.

Re: First trip...3 night stay recommendation?
Question about water sources. When I did my trip to Alaska I didn't have to worry about filters or tablets because the glacial water was abundant, pure and oh so good. Any recommendations for what I should bring with me for this trip?

Re: Guide to handheld VHF's
In the article, it said most VHF handheld radios can only transmit within a 3-8 mile range and I am guessing with overcast and poor weather conditions range is closer to the low end. With how much VHF radios cost, do you believe the investment is really worth it for such short range?

I can't seem to find it now but I remember someone posting their paddling route from their GPS & even listed the coordinates that they back country camped at on the way along that stretch.

it was the worst administration in our history as far as how lax they were with chemical levels in the water. Several different times they loosened up regulations. IMO to help out their big business friends.

Queen weight restriction
The only time I went to IR they never weighed our gear (thankfully since we took way too much) & I can't find a definitive answer elsewhere.
Does the small bag they allow you to carry on the Queen count towards your 70 lbs of gear you are allowed before being charged extra? Or is this bag separate?
