Re: NP annual pass question
Note that the National Park Service $80.00 "Interagency Annual Pass" is not valid at Isle Royale. Isle Royale charges a fee of $4 for each day you are on the island. There is an Isle Royale $50 "Individual Season Pass" good at Isle Royale only, so as Nick noted, if you'll be on the island 12 days ...

NP annual pass question
I may be going to IR in May and was wondering about the NP annual park pass since I'm also going to Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton and maybe Rocky Mtn NP in August.
When you make reservations (via Grand Portage) to go to IR, is the fee included already or do you pay it when you get to the ...

Re: Shelter Graffiti
Outhouse graffiti can be pretty funny after a few days in the woods.

Re: VHS has been discovered in Lake Superior
Bad news. I fish the St Louis River a lot and haven't seen anything bad yet, hopefully it won't hurt it too much. I guess we'll find out this spring.
Pretty sad the Gov't doesn't seem to care much. I understand the need for business/shipping, but how many years does it take to find a responsible ...

Re: Minong
There were sporadic rock cairns. When on the ridge itself I just walked until it dead-ended and then looked for the trail that lead through the woods and back up to the ridge.
There was one little hill between N.Desor and Windigo that once I climbed it (I think it switchbacked and was kind of ...

Re: Minong
I packed all of my things in the outhouse at N.Desor to get out of the rain. Wouldn't you know it, a tent pole got stuck and I sat out there in the rain fighting it. lol. I think it had stopped raining about 45 minutes into the day. My tent was wet and heavy. Also saw a pileated woodpecker on about ...

Re: Minong
I've hiked it from the intersection between Todd and Little Todd (I did a loop from the Greenstone) back to Washington Harbor.
I saw a bull moose just off the trail on the way to little todd. About 5 minutes later another one took off running close to me but I didn't see it, just heard the loud ...

Re: Hanging food at campsites?
Why not just keep it all in your tent? I keep everything in there unless I'm camping somewhere where there are bears.

Re: Greenstone vs. Minong?
I think if you wanted to start on the Minong you might want to spend the night in Washington Creek first and then get an early start the next morning.
I just did a stretch of the Minong a few days ago (hatchet lake to little todd, n.desor, wash creek) and it was a little slippery in the rain but ...

Thanks! I figure if I have extra time I could hike around Windigo until I get picked up.

First IR trip this June
Ok, made my reservations a couple days ago. I leave 6/6 (sat) and come back 6/11 (thrus). My plan is Windigo-Greenstone-Hatchet lk Trail-Minong-Windigo.
Is this a realistic plan within that time frame? My original plan was to start on the Minong Trail but everything I've read here advises to travel ...
