Re: May 2018 First Boat Runcation (West side)
Hey Ed, thanks for the nice words. Cameras: My good camera is an Olympus OM-D EM10 Mark ii--that's a mouthful. I love the camera and bring it along if I'm screwing around or hiking, but if I'm running I'll bring my Olympus tg-5, which is a small, indestructible little beast that I can take ...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th
Thanks Captain Don. I was kind of assuming that might happen anyway. Reschedule works for my crew so I better get over there and reserve a spot or two.

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?
If you do bring poles, consider getting some cheap rubber tips. This will not only stop them from sticking into mud, but it will give you a lot more traction on rocks (and reduce your noise too so you can see more wildlife).

Re: Itinerary Advice - Early May (First Boat?)
I think it looks fine. Consider the blowdown stuff--it's a very valid concern but you should be able to climb around things. Bring lots of socks and maybe an extra pair of shoes because those things will get wet. I'll see you on the boat and maybe on some of those trails.

Re: Minong in May?
As someone who loves first or second boat (Voyageur II), I can't imagine why you would postpone. I love that early spring on the island, obviously, although it can be a bit unpredictable. I'm getting dropped off at McCargoe (base camping and trail running from there) on first boat (May 5) this year ...

What's up with the winter study this year? I've only seen the above mentioned facebook post, and nothing on their blog or other media. Just curious.

I'm considering some kind of solar charger, mainly for my camera batteries.

Re: Need Advice; Planning a 5 night traverse
I agree with what Ingo says about considering the lowest ability in the group. How old are these scouts? I think your longest day is 11 miles, or slightly over, which is definitely doable, but could get longish for some, especially if their packs are heavy. To me the important part would be shaking ...

Re: Need Advice; Planning a 5 night traverse
I like this for a few reasons: you're taking them across the island; you're giving them a taste of the Minong but not making them do that long North Desor to Washington Creek haul; and it has lots of variety of scenery and mileage (long and shorter days). It would be nice if you could plan a zero ...

Re: trail runners?
While I respect Dufresne for writing the guidebook, I find that blog incredibly arrogant and I'm confused what his beef is. Maybe he didn't like the encounter he had with one runner, who, from the description, simply said, "Excuse me." Dufresne intrepeted the person's tone as "snarky" while someone ...

Re: Spring 2016 (Second Boat) West End Runcation
Thanks guys. Midwest Ed, I did drink the tea and I'm still tripping. Just kidding. I have no idea what he put in there, although I often use him when I'm in the woods, sending him pictures of plants and asking if they're safe to eat (after tasting something last week, I was gently reprimanded). When ...

Spring 2016 (Second Boat) West End Runcation
I don't know why it took me so long to write this. I was working on it as a magazine article but decided to do it as a blog as well so I can be a bit more expansive. Enjoy.
