2018 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

Post by Tom »

A new year brings us a new trip log!

Once finalized as best as possible, post your itinerary, and then look around the list at who may else be enjoying a trip at the same time. It's a great opportunity to make new friends on the isle.

If you have questions or want feedback on your planned trip, consider posting your questions on the Trail and Campsites (viewforum.php?f=4) and Canoeing, Kayaking, & Fishing (viewforum.php?f=5) subforums.

We also have a visual calendar (calendar) to post the simple schedule, as well.

When you return, we hope you share your experience with a Trip Report!

Please copy below and post your plans in the following format:

Plan on getting dropped of at Chippewa Harbor, eventually paddling over to Malone Bay. Once I complete that paddle, I will have circumnavigated the island and will have hiked every trail on the island, some more than once. It's only taken me 40 years!

Editted: Now it's an actual plan!!

Who: torpified and her (fiercely attached to furniture, especially beds and toilets) husband
Where (now): Ann Arbor, MI
When: early June
How: the Ranger
Scheme:
Days 1 and 2: enjoy the furniture in RH, with breaks for dayhikes and canoes.
Day 3: Voyageur to Chippewa Harbor; walk to McCargo; hopefully nab a tastefully appointed shelter
Day 4: Walk back to RH
Day 5: Ranger back to Houghton

Notes: If you have tips on selling those fiercely attached to furniture to the less furnished stretches of IR, please share them! Also, it remains my aspiration to SEE AN OTTER!!

Will be using water taxi and Voyageur to base camp. Will be bringing out a lot of camera gear for Milky Way images among others. The second time at Daisy will be using off trail backcountry camp permit to stay up by fire tower to hopefully get some Milky Way,sunrise/sunset images from high on island. This will be first time bringing all my camera gear, Go Pro, waterproof Nikon and 2 Canon DSLR's, tripod etc. Too much weight to backpack. Have always brought disposable, point and shoot cameras. This time all the gear with a little luck it will be clear at least one night.
First visit at age 8 in 1963 numerous times since then, last visit 2021, 30+ times

This is my first time going a big solo backpacking trip like this- I have adequate hiking and camping experience and I am in pretty good shape, but I would still like some feedback on my planned itinerary. It's not really one I've seen in any of the research that I've done.

I plan on taking the Isle Royale Queen IV out of Copper Harbor, arriving May 14th and departing May 18th (so ~4 days and 4 nights)
Day 1: RH to Moskey- 11 miles
Day 2: Moskey to Hatchet Lake- 13 miles
Day 3: Hatchet to McCargoe- 8 miles
Day 4: McCargoe to 3 Mile: 12.5 miles
Day 5: 3 Mile to RH, plus Scoville Point (barring time)- 3 miles + ~4 miles

Is this doable? I've done a bit of pre-packing and I'm planning for my pack to be about 35ish pounds. I know the weather will probably be rainy and it'll get cold at night. I have everything waterproof I need, and a sleeping bag rated to 0.0F. If these 10+ mile days seem like they are a big stretch because of trail conditions or pack weight, please let me know because I have made shorter itineraries as well. I just want to see as much of the island as I can.

Mod Note: Discussion of cadenparulski itinerary moved to the "Trails & Campsites" subforum.

Itinerary:
14-May ROCK HARBOR DAISY FARM
15-May DAISY FARM MCCARGOE COVE
16-May MCCARGOE COVE TODD HARBOR
17-May TODD HARBOR LITTLE TODD
18-May LITTLE TODD NORTH DESOR
19-May NORTH DESOR WASHINGTON CREEK
20-May WASHINGTON CREEK SOUTH DESOR
21-May SOUTH DESOR HATCHET LAKE
22-May HATCHET LAKE WEST CHICKENBONE
23-May WEST CHICKENBONE MOSKEY BASIN
24-May MOSKEY BASIN THREE MILE
25-May THREE MILE ROCK HARBOR

Notes/Other: This will be my longest and earliest trip to the island. Usually I go for 5-8 days after Memorial Day, but this year I'm thinking about taking the first Queen over. I'm planning for cold temps, lots of rain, and dead-fall the whole way. I'm planning long days but I'm over 40lbs lighter than the same point last year and have daylight on my side. I usually wake up with the sun and am on trail by 7:30-8:00 AM, so on the longer days assuming 1-1.5 miles per (typical pace is 2-2.5 on previous trips) hour I'm still in camp before 7 PM.
