Feldtmann Loop vs Minong
Planning our 5th trip to the island next month and debating on the route. We are experienced backpackers, do about the 10-15 miles comfortably, and always like to combine a few backcountry sites with some traditional campgrounds. My favorite place on the island is Todd Harbour and have heard nothing ...

Re: Favorite Campsites
Todd Harbor is my favorite, Lane Cove would be next. I guess I prefer sunsets vs sunrises. However, I really like Malone and Chippewa as well. I always stop and bask on the rocks at Three Mile, but have never actually stayed there.

Re: staking out at Belle Isle
Considered renting a canoe, but we are not "experienced canoers". Most of my canoe experience has been on very small ponds, nothing like Superior. I could also rent a fishing boat from the marina again, but that gets expensive for 3-4 days. Would there be any other comparable "island campsites" that ...

staking out at Belle Isle
So the lady and I have been to the island for 3 years straight. We usually do about 10 miles a day and move everyday. However, the lady tore her ACL skiing, so she cant really hike the distances this year. We rented a boat and spent 2 nights at Caribou a few years back and loved it. Complete ...

Zone 14 backcountry
Anybody here camped in backcountry zone 14 before? I go about 10 miles a day and plan to head in that direction my first day from Rock Harbor. I have been to IR before and have backcountry experience in zone 1 and 41, but never hiked further east than West Chickenbone on the Greenstone. Looking to ...

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)
I prefer to only add boiling water and cook everything in ziploc baggies. If I use mountain house meals I take them out of the bag and put them in a gallon ziploc. It is lighter and rolls small easier, just be sure to write the directions on the bag with a sharpie. I also put all of the food for a ...

Copper Harbor Lodging/Restaraunts
Have always gone from Grand Portage, but due to schedule conflict we are catching the May 9 Queen ferry. Are there any reasonable lodges to stay the night before we depart. Is camping an option? Also, is there any restaraunt that would be open early enough for breakfast before we head to the dock. TIA

Jobs at Isle Royale
Hey all, this site was was very helpful last summer before our trip, so I thought I would come here again. I was wondering what employment options were available on the island. This is probably wishful thinking, but my girlfriend and I were hoping to land something up there this year. She has a ...

Rock Harbor Fishing
I will be renting a boat from the marina on 5/22-5/23. I was wondering about doing some fishing in Rock Harbor. Here's the deal though, I know VERY VERY little about fishing. My entire experience is fishing walleye from the shore with a worm. I can however clean a walleye. I am aware that I will ...

Greenstone Grill and Lighthouse Restaurant Questions
Does anyone know the daily hours for these places? Also, will they be open by May 21st? Lastly, the Lighthouse looks to be the fancier option. Would it be acceptable to eat dinner there after 9 days on the trail without much of a shower or change of clothes. I assume I will have a nice "stank" built ...

General Campsite question
I pulled this from the backcountry zones thread....If you stay on-trail during your visit, the registered itinerary on your backcountry permit lists the campsites you plan to visit. Keep in mind that this is a tentative plan upon which you are free to improvise, sometimes by necessity as dictated by ...

Re: 1st Trip to IR - 12 day itinerary
Thanks for the response! I just got the boat reserved today. They start renting the 22nd, so we will get it 2 days before we leave the 24th. I will ask about the boating restrictions once I get up there. Our boat plans are pretty fluid, so we can make whatever work based on rules, weather, etc. once ...

are there any Lakes that you wouldnt drink from?
Taking a sawyer mini and some tablets for backup so it will be filtered, but are there any lakes on IR that you simply would not drink from no matter how its filtered? Just trying to plan water fills each day along the way. All info is appreciated. Thanks
