Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem

I am a backpacker who is lucky to have a friend with a 17' Lund with a 60 hp motor who likes to have a fishing partner. And I will take every opportunity to go to Isle Royale - even if it means learning to fish. Last year we took his boat on the Ranger going to Windigo. We spent 3 days at the ...

Re: Ranger III taking reservations 1/03/22

Found my answer! On the IR NPS.gov website they list Reservation Availability for each day they have trips, for both Rock Harbor and Windigo. This list includes the number of spots for people and motorboat spaces and it does include motorboat spaces for the Windigo trips. Let the planning begin....

Re: Ranger III taking reservations 1/03/22

Does anyone know if the Ranger will be transporting boats to Windigo on their (3) trips to Windigo this year? I would like to get dropped off at Windigo with a 16' Lund and then picked up at Rock Harbor but I don't know if that is possible.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

OK, so what exactly does one say to someone who is requesting to share your shelter, assuming there are no extenuating circumstances? I also would prefer not to share a shelter even though there is only one of me. With COVID I guess I should be able to just say I'm not comfortable sharing my shelter ...

New Windigo Store

Just wondering if anyone has any idea what the status of the construction of the new store they are building at Windigo is? I know they were working on it last fall, and I am sure its completion is delayed, but just curious how much is done. I really like the old store, and sitting on the deck with ...

Re: Todd Harbor/Little Todd Stream

Thanks all for the responses. I must say the thought of wading in the water is not pleasant, however I agree the option to head back towards Todd Harbor is pretty unappealing too.

Todd Harbor/Little Todd Stream

I am heading to the island tomorrow (YEAH!) and part of my route is heading from Todd Harbor to Little Todd. There is a stream along this route that I have crossed before. 3 times it was a relatively easy rock hop but one time it was a real big challenge to get across. Basically I had to slide along ...

Re: Gaiters

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I have decided to try the Kahtoola gaiters also. I've not used gaiters in the past but I am thinking it is going to be muddy and very possibly snowy on the trails. I had a very bad experience with rain running down my pants and into my boots during one of ...

Gaiters

I am heading to IR the mid to end of May, starting at Windigo and heading towards the north side of the island. I am thinking I may want to invest in a pair of gaiters. I wear over the ankle height hiking boots. I know quite a few people seem to wear DG gaiters but I am concerned they will not keep ...

Re: Early Season Access to Cooking Fuel

Thanks for finding the answer to my question and attaching the link. I will contact the seaplane people and see if I can have fuel pre-positioned also. That will solve my problem and make my adventure much more enjoyable!

Early Season Access to Cooking Fuel

I am planning a trip to IR for the end of May, perhaps the week of the 20th. I am planning on going on the seaplane and starting my adventure at Windigo. I know I cannot take fuel on the seaplane but the store won't be open yet. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get fuel for my Jetboil? I really ...

Re: Wi-Fi at Rock Harbor

So... wondering if anyone has the password for the Wi-Fi at Rock Harbor this year? Very soon, we will be on the island for almost two weeks. One thing I enjoy about the island is the complete "getting away from it all." However, my recent college grad daughter is actively looking for a JOB and to ...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

The trip was great! When we got to the Porkies Ranger Station the Ranger noted which trails had not been checked, which ones were clear, and which ones were a mess. She noted there was going to be a big effort this week to clear the trails. We ended up parking at the Government Peak Trailhead and ...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

Thanks for the reminder on the Permethrin. I was not even thinking about ticks this early in the season

With the recent ice/snow storm in this area I am thinking we need to have a route planned where we do not have to cross any streams!
