Thanks for the kind wishes everyone. Just loaded the pack into the car---everything fit with room to spare!!! I hope that doesn't mean I forgot something! :| After a while, I just start over-thinking it. Heading to the family cottage tomorrow. Making the drive to Copper Harbor on Friday.

Leaving For IR This Saturday!
Not a trip report, but a report on a trip! :)
I can't believe my departure date is almost here. I leave Copper Harbor Saturday morning (7/11) and return on the following Saturday (7/18). It seems like just yesterday I was planning my trip while 10 inches of snow was falling outside the window. Six ...

Tom--
Awesome trip report. One of the best I've read. Pretty cool you got to chat-up Rolf on the boat ride over. I ran into Rolf two years ago at Daisy Farm. Incredibly interesting guy to chat with. He IS a rock star...more Jim Morrison than Mick Jagger.

Re: Boots
I use the Asolo TPS 520. Full-grain leather, fairly high-cut and....heavy. But, I wouldn't trade them for the world. They are simply the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. Rarely do I get 'hot spots' and I can't remember the last time I needed moleskin. Break-in time is minimal, especially for ...

Snow on May 31st! That's pretty wild. No doubt it's a completely different world up there!

Re: Isle Royale talk at Midwest Mountaineering
Glad to hear the discussion was success. Turning new folks on to Isle Royale is a wonderful thing--more people to help protect this wonderful place.
The REI in Northville, MI is having an Isle Royale discussion later this month. I"m not sure who is leading the presentation, but I would expect it ...

Re: Hanging food at campsites?
I've never hung my food bag on IR. Although, I've encountered some pretty brazen camp foxes at Daisy Farm and Three Mile. I suppose I should reconsider this when I'm on the island in July--it would suck to lose food on the 3rd day of an 8 day solo!

Re: Series of questions
My thoughts...
I never blink at the cost of the boat ride from Copper Harbor or the Voyageur fees for a water taxi. I suppose I'd pay whatever they charged since it's that or nothing. The service on both boats has always been courteous and professional. These guys are pros.

Re: What do you never leave home (to Isle Royale) without?
I never leave without my dog-eared copy of Walden and other writings of Thoreau. Wonderful reading while eating dinner and enjoying the quiet.
I also never go without my 4 liter collapsible Platypus. I fill it up when I get into camp with filtered water and empty the last of it into my hydration ...

Re: East Pack Update
This is very disturbing news.
I have a feeling the clock is ticking for IR's wolf population. I'm really, really glad I'm heading back to the island this July to roam amongst them at least one more time. Thanks for the info.

Re: Footprint or No Footprint, that is the question......
Another Tyvek guy here. Personally, I think most tents nowadays are tough enough to endure without a groundsheet, but I always ere on the side of caution. Plus, I prefer a clean tent when I pack up each morning. The Tyvek is easier to store in an outside pocket where the rest of my gear won't get ...
