Re: Wolf Sightings
He came out of the woods about 25 ft away from where we were sitting and trotted around the cove, and was about 75 feet away by the time I calmed down enough to get my camera out, on and took the picture. I think he was looking at me as I stood to take the picture. I got a few more blurry pictures ...

Re: Wolf Sightings
My wife and I were on the Island the week of Memorial Day. I have not gotten my trip report together yet but the highlight of a near perfect week was seeing a wolf at Moskey Basin. We were in Shelter 8 sitting on the rocks when a lone wolf walked out of the woods about 25 ft away. He/she walked ...

Re: Early bugs, spring 2010
The week after memorial day on the East end was not bad. My wife and I did treat our clothes before hand and that seemed to help. The mosquitos were there and we did use deet most evenings but never had to use our bug nets. To me that is a success! The worst bites my wife got were in Copper Harbor ...

Re: Moskey Basin and Three Mile
I was on the Island a few weeks ago and spoke to a ranger making his rounds at Three Mile. He said that it was mainly ice damage and that they hoped to have Three Mile and Moskey repaired this season.

I would always bring a rain shell. You never know when the Island will create its own weather.

I second the ULA packs. My Circuit has treated me well. Very light and comfortable.

Re: Early bugs, spring 2010
Thanks Tom, my wife is coming this year and she is a mosquito magnet. We are treating our clothes (which I have never done before) and will have the bug dope and keep my fingers crossed. Last year I went the same time you did this year and saw maybe one mosquito the entire 10 days. It was fantastic ...

Re: Early bugs, spring 2010
Can anyone who made an early trip to the Island give a report on the bugs this spring? With all the hot and cold trends I am not sure what to expect during the first week in June. In a "normal" year they should not be bad, but this year.?.?.?.?

Re: Waterfalls
After leaving the Feldtmann Lake campground on the way up to the ridge. About 1/2 mile south (off to the right) of the trail just before the Feldtmann Lake over look there is a series of waterfalls. By the time the water reaches the trail below it is more of a swamp than an actual stream. I was ...

Re: Lake Holloran
I would suggest going very early in the year. I spent a week off trail in that area last year while volunteering with the Wolf-Moose study. We were there in the middle of May and it was some of the thickest brush, cedar swamp, deadfalls and just about anything else that could impede hiking I have ...

Re: Weighing gear
Lightening your load does not have to break the bank. When I started getting serious about backpacking a few years ago I already had some neck and knee problems. If I wanted to continue I needed to consider carrying as light a load as possible. Fortunately, at that point most of my equipment was ...

Re: Showers at Windigo
On the flip side, does anyone know when the showers at Rock Harbor open? We will be there the week of 5/31 this year. I was told by the lodge that the Dining Room and Grill will open on Tuesday, June 8th.
