I'm pretty disappointed I missed this last night (Monday, 10/24/2011). I haven't seen the Northern Lights since around 1972. I hoped to see them on visits to Isle Royale but have not. Did anyone see them last night? Or on IR?
"According to Triton College astronomer Dan Joyce, this was the Chicago area's first significant northern lights event in nearly seven years. By most accounts, the display peaked between 8:30 and 9:15 p.m.
Urban lights prevented city dwellers from taking in the show, but many area locations were dark enough to experience the exhibition, including Batavia, Mundelein, Long Grove, Champaign, Kenosha, Algonquin and Milwaukee."

My first trip to IR, I was with the Scouts on High Adventure. I was fortunate to have my dad as Scout Master, and on that trip in particular. I could go on and on how this was a formative trip for me both as a young teen and in my relationship with my father. One of my most vivid memories though was of us two laying on the shore near the docks in Rock Harbor. The Northern Lights set the sky ablaze with so many colors, on par with what it must have been like last month. I've seen the lights a couple times since then, but in a city setting during a relatively ho-hum display. I don't think anything will ever top that first experience.
