Whats the current wolf status?
Whats the current wolf status? I read the report about only 16 being left awhile ago. Is there any more updated information? Thanks

If you go to the Winter Study site, you can get updates. They usually don't give a total number of wollves till the report which comes out in March.

Re: Whats the current wolf status?
I was reading some Leopold and thought of the Isle Royale wolves..their so lucky to be so undisturbed by man.
“We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes – something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.”

I was reading the blog about the study and it seems there is only one female wolf left on the Isle Royale, is this true?

Re: Whats the current wolf status?
From my reading that's what it sounds like. And maybe only 8 wolves on the island--6 in the Chippewa Harbor pack and the mating pair on the west end. Hoping they've missed something (or maybe I have...)scotty wrote:I was reading the blog about the study and it seems there is only one female wolf left on the Isle Royale, is this true?

Do you think this could be the end of the wolves of the Isle, if this female fails? I know their opposed to reintroduction.

John, are the others assumed to be lone wolves? Do they know where they are?johnhens wrote:I heard maybe 10-12 wolves, over the weekend.

Re: Whats the current wolf status?
After the IRNP session on Friday at Canoecopia, during an informal Q&A it was mentioned that there has been a new litter that includes females. It was a very informal and unofficial statement so I'd wait for the annual report to come out shortly before I draw too many conclusions.scotty wrote:Do you think this could be the end of the wolves of the Isle, if this female fails?

Thats good to hear. I definitely hope the mother gave birth to more female offspring. Their survival could very well be resting on it.
