IR no longer the least visited NP

Post by fonixmunkee »

It would appear that Isle Royale is no longer the least-visited National Park. That title now refers to Kobuk Valley NP:

And what about the stats that it's the most-revisited?

With the creation of so many new national parks in Alaska, IRNP hasn't had that distinction for several years. For those in the "lower 48" it still holds true.

I don't know about revisits but it wouldn't surprise me at all. I do remember though seeing a stat that I can't support with a link but it dealt with IR being at the top or near the top in most overnight backcountry stays or longest length of stay (must have been per visitor). I just can't remember. I found this NPS website that will call up records for each location. One problem when trying to compare locations is that each location uses different counting standards.

p.s. Based on the lifetime total visits of 980,567 through 2011 the One Millionth visit should happen next year (or maybe still this year).

I am presently picturing Rafiki going through the calculations and gyrations as to how he could be that guy. :D

We were told by NPS on the ferry that the duration of stay was the highest at over 4 days. They said the average Yellowstone visit was under an hour.

This was what I came up with via google.

That is because many people use the park as a short cut. It is too big to drive around.
