overnight trip suggestions?

Post by stevejc »

My wife and I (late 50s) are planning an overnight trip during the week in late August. Any suggestions for a not-too-long hike and place to camp?

You don't think it would be fully occupied that time of year?

I second Windigo. It's less busy and a nice place to relax. Washington Creek Campground is maybe 1/4 mile from the dock and you can day hike from there. I was there in late July last year and it wasn't full. Since the boat gets there in the a.m. and backpackers typically get in in the p.m. it shouldn't be a problem--folks leaving that day may not be packed up yet, but you should be able to tag a shelter--#1 is great. (odds are you can get a shelter, but do bring a tent, since there's never a guarantee). The hike down the Feldtmann trail is nice, you can go as far as you like (then back).

If you're up to hiking 4-5 miles in, Huginnin Cove is also great. It's 4 miles one way and 5 the other. Campsite #1 is also the choice one there. I did share my site last year, as it filled up in the evening, but sharing on Isle Royale isn't a problem :). The loop is also a good 9 mile day hike if you stayed at Washington Creek.

If you have to come from the Michigan side, Three Mile campground is, well, 3 miles from Rock Harbor where the boats dock. But for just a night, I'd probably just camp at Rock Harbor, hike to Scoville Point, rent a canoe in Tobin Harbor, and/or do the loop to Three Mile (in that order).
