Buckeye "Seniors" Final Itinerary, 9/10-17

Post by ulmer1 »

Here is the itinerary for our visit to IRNP coming up beginning September 10th. We are now down to 6, so will not be considered a group, which is good! We lost our two "youngest" hikers, so now our average age is up to 65!! Plan to do some fishing at each campsite also.
Any suggestions/reactions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!!

September 9: Arrive in Copper Harbor, hopefully before sunset, after 14+ hours on the road beginning in SE Ohio.
September 10: Board the Isle Royale Queen for the Island. After registering, hike to Threemile via Tobin Harbor Trail.
September 11: Hike to McCargo Cove via Mt. Franklin/Greenstone/East Chickenbone Lake Trails.
September 12: Hike to Lake Richie via Indian Portage Trail.
September 13: Hike to Chippewa Harbor via Indian Portage Trail.
September 14: Either stay a second night at CH OR hike to Moskey Basin via Lake Richie Trail.
September 15: Depending upon what we did on 9/14, either hike to Moskey Basin OR stay a second night at MB.
September 16: Hike to Threemile.
September 17: Hike to Rock Harbor via shoreline trail. Possible "day hike" to Scoville Point before catching the ferry back.
September 18: Back to Ohio.

Looking forward to a great experience/adventure!! Special thanks to all "responders" to my previous post started way back early spring. Thinking about Glacier Nat'l Park next year, but just might be back here instead!!

From one person from Ohio to another this looks like a nice trip. I'm 68 and 8 to 10 miles a day at IRNP (ISRO) is normally fine for me. Look forward to your report and hopefully some great pictures. Enjoy!

Hey Mike! Approximately what time will you be "passing through Threemile?" I am guessing that we will reach Threemile around 4:00 pm on the 10th. If you are hiking through we would enjoy a few minutes of conversation with you if you have time. If you are on the water, we will be looking for you if we are at the campsite. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey Ulmer. My name is actually Tim ;) There are some pretty cool people on here named Mike so I will take that as a compliment :D I forgot that we are taking the Tobin Harbor trail too. The plan was to take the Tobin Trail to the Greenstone and come back down to Daisy Farm. However, that would mean passing above Three Mile and missing the opportunity to collide pathes. I am going to talk it over with the girlfriend tonight before we leave tomorrow morning and see if she is cool with just going down from the Tobin Trail to Three Mile to Daisy :) I do not see why this would be an issue so count on us passing through around 5pm :)

Hey Tim - My apologies! Being labeled a "Newbiecake" (not sure who did that) on here is totally accurate. Looking at the Moderators below the topic, I read it as Mike being Rafiki's first name and didn't think about there being two individuals. Sorry!! Regardless, if you decide to rearrange your travels and we do meet up, that would really be cool for all of us, especially since this is our first time on IR! Your experiences/stories/suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!! FYI - my first name is John.

It going on 2:30am and were leaving tomorrow. Don't ask me why, because there is no good reason for me being up this late :) However, I talked to Shelly and were going to make it a point to pass through Three Mile from the Tobin Trail. We look forward to meeting you John. Keep an eye out for us

Will do Mike! Hope you and Shelly are having (or had) a safe trip there. We get on the boat out of Copper Monday at 8 am. Hope our paths do end up crossing that afternoon/evening!

Tim - I have no idea when you are going to be reading this message, but at least I and my brother will not be making the trip. Our sister's husband past away this afternoon unexpectantly. Not sure what we would have done if it had happened while we were on the island, so I guess there was one blessing through all of this.
At this time I am not certain if the other four guys will go ahead with the trip. I am trying to encourage them to go ahead, but . . . . Hopefully we will be able to try it again sometime, but there's no guarantee in life is there.

Tim - Just a quick heads-up, the other four are not coming either. Hopefully another time, but obviously none of know what even tomorrow will bring. John
