The Spirit Little Cedar Tree

Post by johnhens »

Those who have had the pleasure of taking either the Voyageur, Sea Hunter or in the past The Wenonah probably have heard of and/or seen The Spirit Little Cedar Tree.
More info:

"Those Ojibwe departing Grand Portage for Minong [Isle Royale] passed the Manido Gee-zhi-gance, or Spirite Little Cedar Tree, on Hat Point. The ancient and gnarled cedar standing alone on a basalt ledge overlooking the lake is a place of reverence for life and powers of Lake Superior. The Spirit Little Cedar Tree is the traditional place to bring prayers and offerings for a safe crossing and fis...hing success. Offerings of reverence of tobacco and ribbon - and earlier , vermilion - were left at the foot of the tree. Paddlers must be careful and behave appropriately, as the Mishipizheu, the underwater lynx, ws thought to have an aquatic lair in the depths nearby." Minong-The Good Place, Timothy Cochrane.

I've also heard it referred to as "The Witch Tree". It was always interesting to see the various offerings and prayers left beside it.

I saw it on my last trip (at least I think I did). I went looking for it but I was too chicken to get closer to the shore in my boat so I was about 200 yards out.
