Took this pano after my first night on the island last October. Am just now getting around to working on the photos I took. Probably a few more panoramas like this one to come.

The ceiling in a cabin at McCargo Bay (#8? it was pretty high up near the trail to the Minong). Stared at that for a few days during bad weather, so I got bored. This is hosted on my server, since Photosynth can't handle these "planar" panoramas:

I think we should come up with a name for the 'flat top' birch grove at McCargoe Cove. (About 1 O'clock in your McCargoe photo.) Every time I visit it always draws my eye (It's so even and flat!) and I keep promising myself I need to bushwack over there just to stand at their base....

as for Photosynth - I use it only to host stuff, but I prefer the standalone Silverlight export as seen in the shelter graffiti deep zoom - it's much sharper if you host it yourself, since over at Microsoft (who is Photosynth) they compress your images much more. But if you don't have your own server, it is the obvious place to host these things, as it is free. The tool you need is called ICE and it's a free download from Microsoft. It sometimes stitches things Adobe Photoshop's image merge won't touch, but I've also had Adobe's tool stitch images ICE didnt' get right. But for the output that lets you get super high-rez images online without forcing people to download a huge jpeg, it is THE tool. The only other stuff out there is dedicated to devices like the Gigapan panorama bot (I have a much cheaper one that I didn't even bring to the island - these are all hand-held or with just plain tripod rotation).

Another one - looking west across the island, with Angleworm Lake on the left and Sargent Lake on the right. October 7 2012, the only nice weather day we had after Oct 3.

This was done handheld, so a little up and down stepping between frames, but hey...

I think this rock formation is called Sleeping Giant - east of Thunder Bay, seen from the Greenstone with a 300mm lens, 4 image stitch

Another Threemile Sunset - this one later than the first, and I used JPEG source files, so ICE didn't mess up the saturation/white balance. This is the way the light really was, not as purple as the other one.

Indeed, those are the trees. I've watched them grow up over the years... Or at least I think I have. I could probably put together a photo montage of perhaps 15 years of growth. Hmmm.. Might have to start digging through boxes of photos...

If you are having a hard time viewing these photos and are using Chrome or Firefox, try opening them in Internet Explorer. I'm on Chrome on Windows 8 and I couldn't see the images until I opened them in IE.

FYI, they are worth the effort.

These panoramas need the Silverlight plugin to be viewed. Should otherwise really be browser-independent. Should even work on a Mac if you install Silverlight. Not on iPad or other crippled operating systems.

There are Flash versions of this technology, but they don't work as well, nor do I have a tool to create the Flash output (each of these images is a set of hundreds of small image tiles in a pretty deep subfolder structure).

The photo gallery I posted in another thread has the same panoramas as flat still images in it, with links to the panoramas. That gallery uses Flash, and you can download large JPEGs of the panorama stitches, too, in case you want to print something big.

You win the internet for this post. This sums up why I *hate* Apple. So, as to not derail the thread...

I have Silverlight installed, but Chrome on Windows 8 must not pick it up because it might native on Windows 8 and Chrome doesn't know how to read it. Works good in IE. So I guess it's just a "me" thing. However, good to know about Silverlight to be able to view these.
